CheckMate: a free Instagram unfollower checker for desktop and mobile
CheckMate reads your official Instagram data export to show, for free, which accounts currently don't follow you back and who you're mutuals with. There is nothing to install: it runs in any desktop web browser or mobile browser, and you never enter your Instagram password.Checking mutuals on PC and checking unfollowers on PC work exactly the same way.
Key features
- Unfollower check — find people who don't follow you
- Mutual check — see who follows you back
- Not following back — people you follow who don't follow you
- Possible username-change adjustment — mismatches are classified by the identifiers present in your export
- My data report — hashtags you watched, an activity heatmap, and DM message counts
- Preview the results — see an example of what you get before you upload
How it works
- In the Instagram app, go to Settings → Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Download your information, and request your data in JSON format.
- Upload the downloaded ZIP file, or the followers/following JSON files, to CheckMate.
- Your follow-relationship results are ready in a few seconds.
Why CheckMate?
Some Instagram unfollower apps ask you to log in with your Instagram account. Handing your password to a third-party service can put your account at risk. CheckMate uses Instagram's official data download instead, so no login is needed and all analysis runs in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and your data is completely gone once you refresh or close the page.

What is CheckMate?
A free tool that reads your official Instagram data export in the browser and compares your follow relationships. It runs the same analysis on desktop and mobile without your account password or a persistent session.
Your original ZIP, username lists, DM contents, and the other party's account names never leave your browser. Who runs the service and where accuracy ends are covered in our operating principles.
Three steps, no login
- Request your data export from InstagramIn Accounts Center, under Your information and permissions, request an export in JSON format that includes followers and following. Choose the date range yourself to match the scope you want to analyze.
- Open the ZIP or JSON in CheckMateSelect the downloaded file in CheckMate. Unzipping and parsing happen in your browser's memory; the original file and your username lists are never sent to a server.
- Review relationships and each file's observation windowSee your mutuals, accounts that don't follow you back, your fans, and any insights your files contain. The actual observation window is also read from the export's earliest and latest timestamps.
The request screens and file locations are in the data download guide; the actual JSON keys are in the ZIP structure walkthrough.
What you'll find in the results
- Relationship comparisonCompares following and followers to compute your mutuals, accounts that don't follow you back, and your fans.
- Possible username-change adjustmentThe newer export format with stable account IDs corrects username mismatches; the older format is flagged as an estimate.
- Per-file observation windowRather than assuming a universal 365-day limit, results are interpreted from each file's timestamp range.
- Export insightsWhen your files include them, activity, saves, DM volume, and ad-related data are tallied in your browser.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need my Instagram password to check unfollowers?
No. CheckMate only uses the ZIP or JSON you download from Instagram yourself; it never connects to your account password or session.
Is my uploaded data sent to a server?
The original file, username lists, DM contents, the other party's account names, and detailed results are processed in your browser's memory. General page-usage analytics and hosting logs are kept separate from this Instagram analysis data.
Does the followers data always cover only the last 365 days?
No. It can vary by account and by the scope you request, so we don't assume a universal time limit. CheckMate calculates the actual observation window from each file's timestamps.
Can you confirm which accounts changed their username?
If the newer format with stable account IDs is present, username mismatches can be corrected. Older-format URLs and timestamps are only supporting signals for likely renames, so a final check on your side is needed.
Does it cost anything?
Everything currently available in CheckMate — unfollowers, mutuals, fans, the username-change adjustment, and export insights — is free, and there is no paid plan to buy.
